Meta tags and Key words
Choosing keywords and creating search engine friendly META Tags
Keywords
Contrary to myth, keywords have little effect on SEO with few search engines supporting them.
But none the less, take a little time to research and place these. Don't comma seperate words, simply use a space so they are indexed together and try not to duplicate words.
Target phrases, try to think like your visitor and use various descriptive terms e.g. big, large, huge, massive, monsterous as we all think and use words differently.
META Descritpion
Your META description should be no longer than 250 characters. These will be indexed on search engines, but only a fraction will be displayed depending on the search engine. Make sure all the important keywords are at the start of the list.
META Title
Take your important keywords and create a short readable sentence with these.
Remember!
- Don't duplicate the homepage META tags throughout your site!
- Each page should have it's own title, desciption and keywords, tailored to the content of the page.
Following these golden rules will create multiple access points to your website, rather than relying on visitors only finding your website through the homepage, giving your site greater visability on search engines.
